Karen Beaudoin finds things for you to do in Portland that are FREE (or so darn cheap they're almost free).
Find out what AcroYoga is or eat some lobster
No one likes Mondays - unless they are Mondays when there's free music to be heard at a cool place like the Seaside Pavillion in Old Orchard Beach. Tonight's show is the only freebie of the summer and it should be a good one with The New York Staff Band in the house. The tunes begin at 7 p.m. and no tickets are required. Take advantage of this great chance to hear good music in a great venue.
If you'd rather keep your entertainment confined to Portland, don't forget that Monday also means trivia night at Slainte. The questions and answers begin at 9 p.m.
There have been a slew of cool things going on at Post Office Park on Tuesdays this summer. This week's noontime event fits that bill, too. It's AcroYoga with Kara Seymour. What is AcroYoga? No idea, but you can find out if you wander over.
If you happen to be out Cornish way tonight, check out the summer bandstand series concert with Frankie and the Flying Hubcaps. It's a freebie but donations are accepted. The music goes from 7-8:30 p.m. Don't forget to bring a chair.
And finally tonight, I don't usually encourage you to attend the Clash of the Titans at Empire Dine and Dance because it is $1 over your daily budget. But this week's event is not to be missed. Styx vs. REO Speedwagon? Seriously? Take it on the run, baby, at 10 p.m. for $6.
Wednesday is the much anticipated start of the annual Lobster Festival in Rockland. Get out to Harbor Park, day or night, and enjoy the races, parade, crafts and, of course, the lobster.
If you're in the mood for some theater tonight L.L. Bean in Freeport is the place to be. The Freeport Shakespeare Festival is going on with a performance of "The Tempest" at Discovery Park. The entertainment begins with the Greater Freeport Community Chorus at 7 p.m. and the show runs until 10 p.m. Best thing? It's free.
For those who need to show their moves on the dance floor, 51 Wharf is the place to be every Wednesday for salsa night. There's no cover and you can get a lesson with Rickey Hines at 9:30 p.m. before moving to the salsa, merengue and bachata beats spun by DJ Erwin.
For a couple more Thursdays you can still enjoy outdoor tunes at Monument Square as soon as you punch out on the time clock. Tonight's bands are Marion Grace and Jason Spooner and Alive at Five, of course, begins at 5 p.m.
Over at Borders near the Maine Mall tonight you can meet and greet a couple of BBQ legends. Ardie Davis and Paul Kirk will be in town promoting their new book, "The Kansas City Barbeque Society Cookbook," at 7 p.m. They might even provide some recipe tips for all the amateur BBQers in the crowd. Davis and Kirk are also in town because the Grillin' & Chillin' State BBQ Competition is happening this weekend at the Raiit Homestead in Eliot.
Finally for the worst part of your work week, Auburn has some summer music on tap tonight at the Hilton Garden Inn, Auburn Riverwatch as Don Campbell takes part in the free Music in the Parks series.
