Getting naked - all over again
Can you believe it's November? Already?
I can't believe it and I'm not sure I'm all that happy about it either. But some folks who are probably thrilled are those who are members of the Naked Shakespeare troupe from Acorn because they're scheduled to be back at Wine Bar tonight - Monday -for an 8 p.m. show. After being booted from the venue, putting on an outdoor show and battling city hall, those who love to quote The Bard are back at it with a roof over their heads tonight. Get out and support them for the minimal cost of a $5 donation.
I have just one other option for you tonight - and I'd really appreciate it if you'd play along. It's Game 5 of the World Series tonight and the Phillies really need some help. So, whether you go out or you stay in to watch the game, please wear your lucky socks, your favorite underwear and your Yankee Hater hat, and cheer at the top of your lungs for Chase, Shane, Cliff and the boys.
Tuesday is all about the music. Starting at 6:30 p.m., you can head over to Andy's Old Port Pub and hear David Beam and The Boys in a freebie show. It's a caz and cool place to hang out and since you're listening to the tunes for free you ought to order a microbrew or two.
Wait until 8 p.m. to start your evening and your best bet is One Longfellow Square, where the Jazz Series rolls on with Mike Arciero and friends. It'll cost you to listen to these guys, but what's $5 when it comes to good music?
You have a couple of non-music, non-drinking options on Wednesday - if that kind of entertainment interests you. From 4-6 p.m., visit the Wild Bird Supply Store in Freeport and meet David Sibley, the renowned bird field guide author and artist. He's participating in a book signing at the store but will likely have some interesting things to say about the birds here in Maine. It doesn't cost a thing to listen in.
Back in Portland, there's an opening reception for the Charles DuBack show at the June Fitzpatrick Gallery at Maine College of Art. The reception - which will likely have some snacks and beverages for attendees - goes from 5-7 p.m. The show stays up through Nov. 25.
With any luck, Thursday will get here in record time this week. (You know you can't wait for another weekend to arrive so you can get back to work raking up all those ?*&%$# leaves.) Sneak out of work a little early today and head up to Wilbur's of Maine in Freeport. Your taste buds will definitely think it's worth it. The event is "Wine, Brownies and Chocolate Tasting," put on by Simply Divine Brownies and Wilbur's. Be there from 4:30-6:30 p.m. It's free.
Also on Thursday, you can get a double dose of entertainment at Slainte on Preble Street. Brian Brinegar is on for the free open mic comedy set starting at 8 p.m. If you can stick it out until 10 p.m., the 21-plus crowd can listen to Moshe rock the house with his tunes. There may be a minimal cover for the late show, but hey, you got paid this week, right?
