Karen Beaudoin finds things for you to do in Portland that are FREE (or so darn cheap they're almost free).

Women's Day and a little Loverless

Monday's can be a drag. No more weekend, a return to the work cube and not a lot going on after the job day ends. But this Monday is an exception because March 8 just happens to be all about the ladies.

If you haven't heard, today is International Women's Day. Space is celebrating the female holiday with a screening of "Rough Aunties," a documentary about a group of women unwavering in their stand to protect and care for the abused, neglected and forgotten children of Durban, South Africa. The film rolls at 7:30 p.m. and its free for all ages.

Also tonight, a little something for the men. It's their night at Buxton Tavern with $1.75 Bud and Bud Light 16-ounce drafts from 4 p.m. until closin' time.

Fun times are to be had at Club 302 in Windham, too. They offer up free pool on Mondays and you can also get your domestic drafts for just $1.50. What a deal!

You know the first thing I'm going to tell you about on Tuesday, right? You guessed it: It's TWO. Tonight you can groove with Loverless and Lost Cause Desperadoes at Port City. Just $2 to get in and $2 for your fave drafts. Enjoy!

If you'd rather sing yourself instead of just listening, head over to the Frosty Pint and do your karaoke with Susan. She'll be handing around the mic starting at 9 p.m.

And before you even think about which music you'll choose, you have to head out to 645 Congress St., formerly the Portland Hall dorm for USM in Portland, for the second anniversary bash for Greendrinks. The monthly networking event runs from 5:30-8 p.m. Bring your own drinking vessel and pay just $2 to get it filled. Or come empty-handed and pay $5. You'll get to socialize with like-minded Portlanders and check out the revamped space.

Wednesday even starts out with an interesting wine tasting hosted by RSVP. Featured are the 2007 wines of the Rhone (which was apparently a very good year), and one that will be poured is the Chapoutier Belleruche. Tasting goes from 4-7 p.m.

If you're in the mood for music on your hump day eve, the Big Easy is the place for hip-hop open mic at 9 p.m. Listen to the likes of MC Homeless, Riddlove and Ill by Instinct. It'll cost you just $4 to get in.

And finally tonight, I know you all read Deirdre Fleming's karaoke spread in last week's Go. So I expect that Empire D&D will be extra packed tonight for Kill the Karaoke at 10:30 p.m. Rip it up with some AC/DC and a live band backing you or do something a little lighter, like maybe some Nancy Sinatra. Trainwreck knows about 150 songs and they'll play anything you want to sing.

And just like that, we find ourselves at another Thursday. (And who can wait for the weekend to come!) If you're planning to rest up so you can really hit the town on Friday, you may want to take advantage of the deal Videoport runs every Thursday: Get a free rental with any paid rental and stay right on the couch for the night. But make sure you tape Survivor.

As expected, there's also a bit of music to be heard tonight. Catch Nervous But Excited and Sorcha Merrill at North Star tonight at 7 p.m. They're only asking for a $5 donation to get in.

And finally, as we head towards another awesome Friday-Saturday-Sunday, settle in at the bar at the Dogfish Bar & Grille and listen to some tunes from Amanda Gervasi starting at 8 p.m. A brew, some friends and a talented local performer - what else do you really need?
