Lost Dog Alert!

heidejul05 shr.jpg
Heidi a deaf Cattle Dog mix last seen near the Portland Jetport

July 6th
Heidi was flown overnight from the Bay Area to Portland, Me. where her familiy is moving to.

July 7th
A staff member from a boarding kennel arrived to retrieve Heidi and take
her to the kennel to stay until Heidi's humans arrived.

Heidi apparently became very, very frightened and slipped out of her
collar at the airport.
She ran and ran and kept running from people.

She ran across a highway and was hit by a car. The driver said Heidi
yelped, rolled three times and then ran away. Heidi was last seen around 8:10pm Thursday evening in a wooded area near
the airport.

July 8th
The owners arived in Portland and searched for Heidi without
success.

July 11th
forwarded email from Heidi's owner:

Would you share the following with your readers?

We especially want to emphasize "do not chase."

--Ask people to make themselves small, and lure her with cheese or peanut butter or burgers (or anything yummy). A kneeling, smiling person is more likely to be able to entice Heidi to approach. We hope that a kneeling, smiling person with a grilled cheese sandwich is irresistible!

Though she cannot hear and will not respond her her name, Heidi understands a number of hand signs.

--The sign we use for "come" is basically what you would do if you wanted to motion someone across the room to come to you (using all four fingers, not just the forefinger). Being fearful, she might ignore this gesture, but she knows what it means.

We are grateful for any help you and your readers can provide. Heidi is a wonderful, special dog--she brings a joyful presence into our lives. We really want her back.

Paul said that he met a lot of great people in Portland. This makes me even more hopeful that Heidi will be found and returned to the humans who love her. Heidi shares an extraordinary bond with Paul. She's a most beloved pet and we will not give up on finding her.

Thank you for your attention, for posting this on your blog, for your help, and for your good wishes.

Linden

Made me cry! When my heeler got lost in Johannesburg, she didn't know her way around the big city and got loose from a friend's apartment during a long downpour that ruined all trax. So how we found her might be helpful to Heidi's people, if she's been with them long enuf to know their scents! Heelers are visual AND scent trackers. We (me and S) walked all night long different streets that kept looping back to the apartment, we laid maybe ten miles of tracks. At 6:00 AM she showed up at the apartment! Heidi's owners should walk in their old smelly shoes from a safe parking area near where she entered the woods, into and out of the woods as far as they can lay tracks of loops back to that car or friendly house, every day lay lots of loop trax. Heidi will pick up one of them and track them to the place where they can see/retrieve her. If she's able to still move. If she was hurt bad, she may lie down, my heeler lay under a tree and didn't make a peep or whimper when she (years later) fell into a river and was swept downstream and caught hurt on a rocky shore. I found her that time by just following the shores downstream. Please post a folllow up Nance, I hope they find her!! Heelers have ten+ lives. Thia

Heidi was last seen in the area of Congress St. and Blueberry Road: http://tinyurl.com/ax3s3

Anyone walking in the Stroudwater area, especially along the Stroudwater Trail please keep an eye out for her. ( She is especially fond of American cheese and peanut butter. )

Studies have shown that escaped/runaway dogs tend to move in the direction of wherever the prevailing winds were blowing at the time they were lost. Essentially their instincts prompt them to travel downwind. Maybe you could check a previous weather report for the day she ran away to find out the wind direction and concentrate your searchs along that path?

Nancy,

My husband's corporate office is in Portland and I sent your blog to him asking if he would forward to the Portland corporate office - let's get out and find this sweet girl!

Also, sitting down in front of the dog is a good lure too, if they can throw some food her way and stay put, they will have a better chance of catching her.....

LATEST SIGHTING!
Heidi was seen today around noon at the Unum campus at Congress by I95. Heidi is clearly staying in that area, as she was also seen near there last night around 10pm on Sunday.

Heidi seems to be healthy, but is still very scared of people and ran back into the woods behind Unum after seeing people around. We hope to set out food and keep her in the area. Our biggest fear is scaring her into the roads where she could be hit by a car.

Thanks so much to everyone for their support around this effort. We want to continue to inform people about her whereabouts and what to do, so any sharing you can do with people is great.

Thanks,
Holly

I believe wholeheartedly in prayers to St. Anthony. The patron saint of things lost. Granted your beloved pet is not a "thing" but a loved member of your family. I will pray for her tonight.

By the way, I am not a religious person but when my prayers to Saint Anthony are always answered I can't help but turn to him during times like these.

There is always strength in numbers !!!
