Update for Heidi the lost dog

heidejul05 shr.jpg
Heidi last seen near the Portland Jetport

I have received countless numbers of emails from well wishers wanting to know if and how they can help to find Heidi.

The good news is that she was seen running midday on the 13th, apparently without any sort of limp.
The bad news is that she won't let people approach her.

So what can you do?
Heidi's family has a plan in effect and will let us know if they need more people to carry it out. I will share whatever they need with all of you. Currently they are rightfully concerned that too many people in the area may drive the frightened dog away.

They thank everyone for their good intentions and hope you will call if you spot her.

If you do spot Heidi, please be prepared to leave food in a safe area near by. Practice calming signs by making yourself small and turning sideways, and do not directly look at her or try to catch her by running after her. Be still and move slowly.

If seen, please call Peggy at 912.484.4221(cell) or 207.389.2434 (local) or Paul at 408.644.9084 (owner)

These updates are great to see; thank you for posting them, Nancy. I think the tips telling us all not to try to approach Heidi make sense; I've met Heidi and know how shy she is around people, and can imagine she's being extra careful in a new territory without her owner.

I think it's a good sign that Heidi has been seen days after the original incident, in apparently good shape. Good luck to everybody in Portland helping get Heidi back with her family!

And I am happy to see updates as well. I work on the UNUM campus and faithfuly watch for Heidi on my way to and from work, as well as during the course of my day. Hopefully she can be safely returned to her family soon! Keep us updated!

Hi - I am Heidi's owner, and I want to say that the people of Portland have been of incredible assistance to me in this situation. I have never seen a city with so many people so absolutely friendly to dogs!

Nancy - I appreciate your attention to Heidi. You have given this story visibility to the right audience, and I believe many of your faithful followers (like Renee) have assisted me in finding my lost dog.

Renee, thank you for your kind attention. I walked the trails in that area last weekend looking for Heidi, and noticed that they are all maintained by the kind folks at UNUM. I think that Heidi probably spends a good chunk of her time enjoying those trails!

I appreciate all of you who have left food for Heidi to find. If I could ask that you continue to do so until Saturday evening, I would appreciate that.

I am flying back on Sunday evening to get my dog. All of your efforts and sightings make me believe that she has stayed in that area. The idea is that if the food stops Saturday night, chances are good that Heidi will be searching on Sunday evening which will increase my chances of bumping into her.

Now for a bit of Heidi trivia, should one of you happen across her. Heidi likes doing the trick "chase your tail" (the hand signal is a circular motion of one of your hands). I know, not a very elegant trick for such an intelligent creature, but when she is muddy it helps clean her feet before she goes into the house. :-)

We all know that dog is man's best friend. Every once in a while, a dog needs a best friend too. You guys have been an excellent host to my wayward dog, and I love you all for your help!

I'll be thinking of you Sunday night.

I think it is wonderful to know how many animal lovers we have in this state. Without those caring people supplying food and water, Heidi wouldn't have a chance of surviving. But let's not forget the power of prayer. I believe that Heidi has had a guardian angel beside her through this whole ordeal. I will continue to pray for a successful family reunion. Alyssa
